Travel feeds the soul. New sights and sounds, a change in scenery, a new adventure, even for a short time, lifts us up in countless ways. Tucked away just up the hill near the bank of the Delaware River in Stockton, NJ, is a Georgian-style inn offering just that type of reprieve any time of year.

The Woolverton Inn features 14 beautifully appointed cottages and guest rooms, each with private baths, luxury linens and, some, with fireplaces. Come morning, guests are welcome to start the day with a delicious 3-course country breakfast on the inn’s expansive front porch before heading out to enjoy the many sights, scenery and gourmet treats of the surrounding Delaware Valley region, including wineries such as Angelico Winery, Federal Twist Vineyard, Unionville Vineyards and Old York Cellars. The charming towns of Lambertville and Frenchtown, as well as Stockton, are all within easy reach, and outstanding restaurants such as the nearby Sergeantsville Inn offer world-class dining options.

The Woolverton Inn offers something much more than outstanding amenities and location, and you sense it the moment you arrive.

But the Woolverton Inn offers something much more than outstanding amenities and location, and you sense it the moment you arrive. Take in the picturesque gardens and the sheep grazing in the field. Enter the front door, and the interior colors soothe the eye and the senses. The Inn’s staff is friendly and attentive without being intrusive (a plus to us!). Fresh made cookies, coffee and tea are always available and often a decanter of Irish whiskey is on hand as well. (The honey flavored Dubliner was delicious!) Attention to detail is paramount here - and makes all the difference.

Woolverton InnkeepersAnd, true to Central Jersey’s heritage, there is history here as well. The Inn was initially built in 1792 and served as a residence, working farm and summer home over the centuries before becoming a B&B in 1982. Current owners, Mary and Mario Passalacqua (right), took over the establishment in 2016 after enjoying long careers in Manhattan and the NY Metro area, Mary as a director of finance and Mario as a sales executive. They were ready to pursue their “encore career” and when they found the Woolverton Inn, the place “checked all the right boxes.” The couple had traveled extensively and lived for a time in Italy, and travelers will recognize that Italian sense of agritourism hospitality here.

“The Woolverton Inn is truly a ‘faraway place, close to home,’ and it is a privilege to welcome (and welcome back) wonderful people from NJ and beyond to our inn every day,” notes Mario. “We have truly enjoyed our time here so far, and are proud to care for and share this very special historic property. “

Whether you’re looking for a weekend getaway, a place to host friends or an event, or the opportunity to relax for a week, no matter where you live in New Jersey, the Woolverton Inn is just a short, scenic drive away – and a wonderful place to stay.

Nancy Brannigan Painter and her husband Ray, publishers of Edible Jersey, enjoyed a complimentary stay at the Woolverton Inn in April 2023. Pulling into the driveway as daffodils bloomed in the sunlight across the Inn’s front lawn, they knew they had come to the right place to break the grey of a long winter.  [Photos courtesy of the Inn and the writer.]
